12 EUWE MATCHES

Twelve important matches by Euwe are available as PGN- and CBase-files. The new annotations were written by Jan van Reek as a contribution to the celebration of Euwe's 100th birthday in 2001. Analyses took one day per game: pgn-file of Euwe matches       zip-file of CBase-files of Euwe matches

1. Alekhine - Euwe, Netherlands 1926-7:  5 1/2 - 4 1/2.

Alekhine played a match against Euwe as training for his encounter with Capablanca. He took the lead by two points. Euwe equalised but lost the last game. The games were played in a number of Dutch cities. This method was repeated in other matches. 

2. Bogoljubov - Euwe, Netherlands 1928:  5 1/2 - 4 1/2; FIDE championship.

When Bogoljubov arrived in Amsterdam, he was arrested as the criminal Liebermann. After his release he sang: "Ich bin ein lieber Mann". He learned about the FIDE championship. The match became exciting too.

3. Bogoljubov - Euwe, Netherlands 1928-9:  5 1/2 - 4 1/2; FIDE championship.

A chess enthousiast financed a second match. Again the games were followed nationwide with great interest. 

4. Capablanca - Euwe, Amsterdam 1931:  6-4.

Euwe had the advantage in many games, but Capablanca was a better fighter. He did not loose a game and benefitted from Euwe's tactical errors.

5. Euwe - Spielmann, Amsterdam 1932:  3-1.

As a preparation for the match aganst Flohr, Euwe played a short 'home' match. 

6. Flohr - Euwe, Amsterdam and Karlsbad 1932:  8-8.

Flohr and Euwe played a peaceful match in two parts: during the spring in Amsterdam and during the autumn in Karlsbad. 

7. Alekhine - Euwe, Netherlands 1935:  14 1/2 - 15 1/2; World championship.

Euwe seemed to be no match for Alekhine at first. After Euwe was deeply offended at Ermelo, he played his best chess ever. Holland celebrated a well deserved world championship.

8. Euwe - Alekhine, Netherlands 1937:  9 1/2 - 15 1/2; Word championship; 3-2 exhibition.

Euwe started as the best player in the rematch. He was humiliated in the sixth game and collapsed. Only the interesting games are selected. 

9. Keres - Euwe, Netherlands 1939-40:  7 1/2 - 6 1/2.

The match could take place, despite the war in several European countries. The games were great and interesting.

10. Euwe - Bogoljubov, Karlsbad 1941:  6 1/2 - 3 1/2.

In their third match Bogoljubov started well in many games, but he made a lot of blunders. 

11. Euwe - Pirc, Bled and Ljubljana 1949: 5 -5.

The openings' expert Pirc took the lead twice. Euwe equalised each time by fine endgames. 

12. Euwe - Donner, The Hague 1955-6: 7-3.

Euwe played the Dutch championship for the last time. He showed his superiority in the Netherlands again. His score in these championships became 79.4%.
